NEUTRAL SPACE

2023

“Neutral Space” is a short documentary that delves into the intersection of techno music and communal expression within the rave scene. Drawing inspiration from Marshall McLuhan's concept in The Medium is the Massage (1967), the film examines techno as a genre and a communicative medium that creates a 'neutral space’. A world where individuals can transcend societal norms and expectations. Through this lens, techno becomes a space for freedom, creating an environment where people can fully express themselves and connect with others without the constraints of identity, politics, or convention.

By exploring the subcultures of rave, queer, and DJ communities in London, "Neutral Space" reveals how these groups harness the power of techno to cultivate inclusive, boundaryless spaces. The film captures the intimate stories of those immersed in this culture, showcasing how music becomes the message, guiding participants toward a shared sense of belonging and creative expression.

“Neutral Space” invites the viewers to reflect on the transformative potential of music as a universal language that fosters connection and liberation.
